Distracted driving has long been a cause of car accidents. According to the Transportation Safety Board we used to see a seasonal increase of accidents due to distracted driving each Summer. As of this writing, distracted driving, as a cause of car accidents, no longer has peaks and valleys. Thanks to modern technology it’s now a constant reason for accidents and is among the top 3 causes of motor vehicle accidents in the US. The culprit is that is that powerful little tool in your hand or pocket right now. The smartphone! The allure of staying connected through calls, texts, and social media has led many drivers to engage in risky multitasking while behind the wheel. However, the consequences of such actions can be devastating. Texting, for instance, takes a driver's eyes off the road for an average of five seconds. In those few seconds, a potential collision becomes alarmingly likely.
Distracted driving extends beyond phone usage. Eating or drinking, adjusting music controls, checking your makeup in the mirror, and even conversing with passengers can all divert a driver's focus and impair their ability to react quickly to changing road conditions. Each distraction increases the likelihood of accidents, endangering not only the distracted driver but also passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists. Efforts to combat distracted driving have included legislative measures, public awareness campaigns, and technological innovations. There are even phone apps to prevent texting and driving. Some of these apps are Drivemode, LifeSaver, TrueMotion Family, OnMyWay & Safe 2 Save. By increasing awareness, encouraging safe driving practices, and utilizing technological advancements, society may work to reduce distracted driving and promote safer roads for all. Can we, do it? Will we, do it? Time will tell.
