It's important to know what to do in the event of an auto accident. Be sure to review this with every driver in your household, especially youthful drivers! DO: Stay calm. DON’T: Get violent - it doesn't help anyone. DO: Make sure you and your vehicle are out of harm’s way. Move to the side of the road if possible. DON’T: Park in the middle of the road, unless required, without your hazard lights on. DO: Call 911 if anyone in the vehicle is injured. DON’T: Get out of the vehicle if you're injured. Wait for emergency services. DO: Exchange insurance information with the other party- this is required by law! Just provide your POLICY NUMBER and CARRIER. That is all. No more. And remember to get their policy number and carrier name. DON’T: Allow the other party take a photo of your ID card- that contains personal info, like your address. Also, no need to provide the other driver your phone number unless you want a date. DO: Understand the situation and what occurred. Write it down later if you’re afraid you’ll forget. DON’T: ADMIT FAULT- that is up to the claims adjusters to decide. DO: Take photos of the scene/vehicle damage if possible. DON’T: Do not take selfies. Not the time or place. DO: File a claim, if necessary, with the other party's insurance company. If they open a claim with your carrier- the 2 adjustors will duke it out. DON’T: File a claim with YOUR insurance carrier, unless the other driver does not have insurance and you want to use your policy to make repairs.
