​While submitting a homeowners insurance claim can be a difficult process, there are actions you can take to make the process go more smoothly. This is a guide for homeowners who are thinking about filing a claim:

1. Mitigate Further Damage:
   • Evaluate the loss or damage to your property before making a claim.  You want to stop the problem from getting worse.  For example, turn off the water to the home if its water related, board up a broken window, etc.  The goal is to prevent further damage.  Keep all receipts for temporary repairs, as these expenses may be reimbursed.
2. Call a Professional:
   • Get multiple estimates for the repairs.  Your insurance company may require these estimates to process your claim.  If it’s a theft claim, collect the total value of the items.
3. Call your Agent:
   • Your agent can help you understand your coverage.  A home warranty may cover some of the repairs that your home insurance doesn’t.

   • Take detailed photographs or videos of the damage.  Make a list of damaged or lost items and their estimated value.
5. Determine if you Want to File a Claim:
   • Consider the estimated cost to repair vs. deductible.
